The Rising Risk of Online Scams in Namibia: How to Protect Yourself

Online scams are becoming increasingly common in Namibia, targeting both individuals and businesses. Criminals often use emails, phone calls, and social media messages that look legitimate but are designed to steal your money or personal information.

Tanya Hopker, Cybersecurity Awareness Specialist at Meinert Cybersecurity, warns that “scammers use urgency and fear to trick people into making mistakes. It’s vital to take a moment and verify before you act.”

Common scams include fake prize giveaways, impersonation of banks, and fraudulent job offers that request personal details or advance payments.
To stay safe:

  • Always verify unsolicited calls or messages through official channels.
  • Avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading unexpected attachments.
  • Never send money or share sensitive information unless you’re certain of the recipient’s identity.
  • Educate family members, especially the elderly and youth, who are often targeted.

By staying alert and informed, you can avoid falling victim to these increasingly sophisticated scams.
