Namibia’s Growing Cyber Threats: Why Awareness Is Our Best Defence

Namibia is experiencing a growing number of cyber threats that affect individuals and businesses alike. Tanya Hopker, Cybersecurity Awareness Specialist at Meinert Cybersecurity, emphasises that while technology is important, people are the most critical factor in preventing cybercrime. “Most cyberattacks succeed because someone clicks on a malicious link or shares sensitive information without verifying,” she explains.

Scammers in Namibia use increasingly convincing tactics, such as fake bank alerts, fraudulent job offers, and prize giveaways to trick people into sharing passwords or sending money. Protecting yourself requires vigilance and simple but effective habits.

Here are some key steps to stay safe online:

• Be cautious of unexpected messages, even if they appear to come from someone you know.
• Never share passwords or PINs via phone, email, or messaging apps.
• Use strong, unique passwords or passphrases that are difficult to guess.
• Enable two-factor authentication wherever possible for extra protection.
• Keep your devices and apps updated to fix security weaknesses.
• Be sceptical of deals that sound too good to be true or pressure you to act fast.
